How Valuable Are Heavy Social Media Users, Anyway? - Forbes

From Forbes... the takeaway from this survey appears to be that just because someone is a heavy social media user, it doesn't necessarily mean they're active in the real world, either as consumers or politically. (In fact, in some cases they're showing the opposite, potentially, to be true.)

Now some of that make sense... if you're on the computer *a lot* then you're not getting out of the house. Oddly enough, though, for the consumer behavior, they show that it's true that heavy social media users spend less even when you're measuring *online purchasing*, much less local dining or hanging out in a coffee shop. So what does that mean for brands that put all their marketing eggs in the social media basket? Magic 8 ball says ask again later. ;-)

... Apple is preparing to announce its "next big thing" -- a new personalized, mobile advertising system that could well be called the "iAd" -- Online Media Daily has learned. The new ad platform, which will be officially unveiled to Madison Avenue on April 7th, has been described as "revolutionary" and "our next big thing" by Apple chief Steve Jobs, according to executives familiar with the plan.

From the 'Things that Make You Go Hmmm' department...the article goes on to call this a battle between "frenemies" Google and Apple, giving Apple credit for doing a better job of diversifying its revenues than Google has. Local and location-based are certainly hot buzzwords for 2010... here's hoping actual local and location-based media can benefit from it!
