Thought Gadgets: The Yelp transparency mistake

Media_http2bpblogspot_kvdbw

Interesting look at what Yelp has done to itself by pushing the advertising and losing some credibility. My problem -- too many reviews that look like disgruntled busboys giving 1 star followed by the owner's brother-in-law giving it 5 stars.

Are there limits to this sort of crowd-sourcing? And, yes, I'm a newspaper guy -- but doesn't this at least suggest that there's still room for the professional critic? (Or even content like http://www.bestofjackson.com?)

Apple Poised To Unveil 'iAd'

new and improved/iphone

... Apple is preparing to announce its "next big thing" -- a new personalized, mobile advertising system that could well be called the "iAd" -- Online Media Daily has learned. The new ad platform, which will be officially unveiled to Madison Avenue on April 7th, has been described as "revolutionary" and "our next big thing" by Apple chief Steve Jobs, according to executives familiar with the plan.

From the 'Things that Make You Go Hmmm' department...the article goes on to call this a battle between "frenemies" Google and Apple, giving Apple credit for doing a better job of diversifying its revenues than Google has. Local and location-based are certainly hot buzzwords for 2010... here's hoping actual local and location-based media can benefit from it!
